I am so excited that the Appeal-Democrat has asked me to start this blog about homeschooling to come alongside the Learning at Home column I’ve been writing the past 2 years.
When our family started homeschooling, we thought it was a temporary situation. We’re now entering our 9th year of homeschooling. This year, we are down to only 6 kids at home, 3 of whom are school-aged
These kids, the ones who pester me endlessly when they know we’re having ice cream for afternoon snack, seem gloriously oblivious to any pending changes to the relaxed summer schedule. At least that is what they want me to think.
That’s OK because Brian and I are implementing a few changes in how we approach homeschooling. In the past, we have used everything from traditional curriculum to computerized programs. We also like to throw in a healthy dose of life skills to round things out.
The challenge for us this year is to do a better job of hiding learning in every opportunity and letting the kids see for themselves that acquiring knowledge is useful. Kind of like hiding vegetables in the meatloaf.
Rose: We’re very pleased to have you join the A-D blogs family. Look forward to your contributions. Len La Barth
