Check Your Child’s Toybox for Lead

November 26th, 2007, 2:20 pm · 1 Comment · posted by learningathome

A friend alerted me to a recent toy recall. I’ll admit, much of the time, I hear about them and don’t think twice. But since we owned 3 Curious George toys that were recalled, I paid attention this time. We had 4, I just haven’t seen the other in a while. Maybe he died of lead poisoning.

So many toys have been recalled lately, that it is hard to keep track. I had heard that Aqua Dots were recalled, but I still see them on store shelves–often at a deep discount, so I’m not sure what is up with that. I know we won’t be buying any, though.

Keeping track of all the recalls can be overwhelming, but there is an easy way to check out toys to make sure they are safe. You can use the list together by the Consumer Product Safety Commission to go through the toys in your home and also to make sure not to bring a hazard into your home this Christmas. The site also has a link to break down recalls by type, so you can find all the lead paint recalls in one spot.

I went to the site to get more information about the Curious George toy recall. Marvel Toys is being very responsive about it, and offering a refund if I send in the dolls (they are in the mail already!). I also found some Barbie accessories by checking the CPSC site, so we are getting free replacements for those too.

I urge you to take a moment and read through the list of recalled toys. Most of the items have pictures to help you identify the toys. Who knows? You may even save a child’s life!
