This week, my column was about our life in the “sandwich,” that place in life where we are caring for parents and children at the same time. We are here in NY, trying to help with what we can help with and not be in the way–not always an easy task with 6 kids in tow.
I know I am learning a lot, not all of which I’m passing to my kids just because they don’t need to know it. I’m planning to write about some of those adventures in the coming days when there are periods of calm and stretches of time where I’m not needed elsewhere.
We are learning about social services and estate planning and really more than we bargained for, but as we are going through this we are making note of what we need to do to plan for our future. Some of this we know, but other parts we are new to us. And, while the circumstances are different for my in-laws than for us, I’m thinking there are a lot of decisions we could/should be making now to make things easier should one of us become incapacitated or pass away. Those decisions, as we are learning, don’t count for much if you don’t write them down. How you write them down is also important.
So, coming soon to a homeschool blog near you….estate planning for homeschoolers and other fun adventures.
Stay tuned.
I am in the sandwich too- full time. Three years ago we remodeled our basement into an apartment for my mom, who is turning 80 this year. I now know more about senior citizen insurance programs than I imagined even existed. I keep up on health issues relevant to her age group and health status. We have all the estate planning done, but she makes me review it occasionally, just to make sure I haven’t forgotten.
And then she went and arranged to have her body donated to a local medical school so I won’t have to plan her funeral. Oh joy.
All this and homeschooling too. Life is never dull.
