Sunflowers and bees

April 3rd, 2008, 11:39 am · 1 Comment · posted by

We planted some seeds this morning, including a half a package of sunflower seeds. We still have some garden prep to finish up before we can plant the rest, but we were itching to get started.

And then I found this. I think it will be fun to be a part of a research project with our sunflowers. I just need to talk the family into going along with my latest scheme. I think they will. Here are the details from the Great Sunflower Project:

As soon as you create an account, we will send you free sunflower seeds. These are wild, native sunflowers (Helianthus annuus). These sunflowers can be grown in a pot on a deck or patio or in a garden. Click here for some advice on growing. If you are able to get your own seeds and want to send us data, please use the wild sunflower. We found ours at American Meadows. That ensures that we will be comparing apples to apples!

With your account, you can join our community discussions on our forum pages.

Better yet, you may participate in our study. Participating is fun and can be done in pots on your deck, your own garden, or any of our public gardens.

The site has some teacher info and lots of great info about kinds of bees, how to find them, as well as instructions for partipating in the study.

We have been talking about setting up some hives at the back of our property, but it is one of those things we just have not gotten around to doing yet. We so enjoy getting fresh honey from a neighbor, and we just think it would be great to try our hand at keeping bees. Maybe this project will heighten our interest in bees.

  • This is interesting. We have grown sunflowers the past two years and always had lots of bees. We will be growing them again this year so now I might have to do this sunflower project.
    Thanks for sharing…
