Mandatory College Applications? What Will Politicians Seek to Regulate Next?

Politicians in Washington D.C. seem to think that their constituents don’t have enough regulations. The next (logical?) step to improving the lives of the citizenry is, in their minds, to require all high school students in D.C. to apply to college or trade school. Even if they don’t plan to attend.

D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown, who introduced the bill, said the proposal would establish a “mandatory workshop” to teach teenagers how to apply for aid and admission. It would then require everybody to apply to at least one post-secondary school before graduation.

“I believe that every child should have the opportunity, even if they don’t go, to at least apply to a college,” he said as he introduced the bill Wednesday.

See, kids do have the opportunity to apply to college. You can Google it and find instructions for crying out loud. The U.S. government has a website that tells you how to apply to college and how to apply for financial aid. Does he honestly believe that the only thing holding some students back is the inability to fill out an application? If they can’t figure out how to follow the instructions on a college application, MAYBE THEY AREN’T READY FOR COLLEGE.

The bill would also require every high school student to take the SAT or ACT tests. While the admissions and test-taking process would entail fees, Brown said he would work with the school system to make sure students have the “resources” to apply.

Resources? Resources? Do you think maybe he means taxpayer dollars? ‘Cause politicians never propose legislation they themselves sould fund out of their own bank account. They seem pretty interested in mine and yours though.

Here is the link to our local junior college’s application. Pretty simple stuff.

When I saw this in the news the first thing I thought of was the Soviet Union. They would make the high schoolers take a test and then apply for them (or rather tell them) what field they will be going into. I guess next they want to force them to show up at least 1 day on campus at college. And if they have no desire (or ability) to go to college, taking the SAT or ACT is a waste of time & money.

  • It is a waste of time and money for the colleges as well. How many hours will be spent going through applications from people who have no interest in attending? I suppose then the politicians will claim they created new jobs (for those processing worthless applications).
