Get Your Government Hands Out of My Kids’ Lunch

Sometimes people ask why I homeschool. These days, I’m likely to answer the question with a question: “Why don’t you?” or, more accurately, “Why do you send your children off to the indoctrination zone?”

News from North Carolina–if a preschooler’s lunch isn’t deemed to fit the schools regulations, the school provides an alternative and charges the parents. In this case, a state inspector (why is she inspecting lunches packed from home? We pay for this? I have an idea for a budget cut!!), saw a little girl’s lunch and decided that Chicken Nuggets–CHICKEN FREAKIN NUGGETS–would be healthier.

The offending lunch? Turkey and cheese sandwich, apple juice, chips, and a banana. The lunch is supposed to contain, according to regulations one grain (bread), one meat (turkey), one dairy (cheese) and two of either fruits (juice and banana) or veggie. So the lunch DID meet the regulations, but the inspector still felt the need to replace a lunch packed at home with government food.

And the little girl went home with this lesson: Your mom didn’t do it right. We know better.

I hope that inspector gets fired. I hope the staff in the classroom that allowed that gets fired. I generally think lawsuits are frivolous for various slights, but I hope the mom sues that school and gets a bazillion dollars. AND an apology!

You wanna know why I homeschool? Today I homeschool because I can feed my kids whatever I want. Today they are having bratwurst from a pig we raised, apples, cookies made by my daughter, and and butternut squash from our veggie CSA box. And we’re washing it down with raw milk from our very own cow.

Thank God we have our very own cow because the FDA is having a conniption fit about raw milk. Your government doesn’t think you are smart enough to decide to drink raw milk either, but that is another rant.
